Eicosapentaenoic acid prevents cardiac fibrosis via activation of free fatty acid receptor 4 in a mouse model of hypertensive heart disease; implications for heart failure preserved ejection fraction

Project Description: Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction is an emerging form of heart failure this is characterized by a stiffening wall and impaired relaxation. It is more prevalent in women, it is overtaking the classic mode of declining muscle strength, and there are no effective therapies. Our studies show that an omega-3 fatty acid known as EPA is an effective therapy because it blocks the signals which activate fiber-producing cells, thereby preventing the heart muscle from stiffening. We use both animal models and human populations to investigate this process.
