Investigating the influence of physiological fluctuation on resting-state fMRI

The quantification of resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) measured by resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) is vulnerable to heart rate changes. To mitigate this physiological confounder, a common practice is to regress out the heart beat signal recorded simultaneously with rsfMRI data. However, how effective this method is, particularly in animal models, has not been fully evaluated.

Here we propose a study that manipulates the heart rate during rsfMRI scans using glycopyrrolate or atenolol. We will estimate how robust RSFC quantification is in a large range of heart rate changes with the conventional data preprocessing approach. Successful completion of this study can provide important evidence to confirm the reliability of RSFC.
