Surface Analysis of Explanted Pediatric VAD Blood Sacs

Overview

The lab is developing a Pediatric Ventricular Assist device (VAD) for use in infants needing mechanical circulatory support.

Objective

The VAD is being tested in animals and this project will use previously developed techniques to quantify thrombus and platelet deposits on the blood contact surfaces.

Methods

Optical profilometry, immunofluorescent labeling of platelets and fibrin using confocal microscopy, and SEM.

Data to be Collected

Size and morphology of platelet/fibrin deposits and correlation with surface defects.

Analysis

Develop quantitative measures of surface deposit locations.
