GRADUATE STUDENTS

Payal Khanna - I graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2006 with my Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering. Before joining Dr. Dong’s group, my research focused on the synergistic interactions between the ChK 1 inhibitor, UCN-01, and farnesyltransferase inhibitors (mainly statins) in leukemia. I chose to pursue my PhD degree in Dr. Dong’s lab since my interests lie in cancer-related research. Currently, my work focuses on elucidating the roles of cell signaling pathways in tumor metastasis and transendothelial migration.

Shile (Shel) Liang -I graduated from Tianjin University, P.R. China, in 2002 with a Master Degree in Biochemical Engineering. Before I arrived at Penn State, my research work is related to Taxol®, which is an active anticancer drug. Therefore, I chose Dr. Dong's lab to pursue my Ph.D. degree so that I can develop my interests in cancer-related research. I am a Penn State Huck Institute for Life Sciences Fellow, too.

Meghan (Henty) Hoskins - I received my BS in 2001 and MS in 2003, both in Mechanical Engineering from Penn State.  My Master's research was conducted with Dr. El-Gindy at the Pennsylvania Transportation Institute on the finite element simulation of a pickup truck rollover.  In the Fall of 2003, I began my pursuit of a PhD in Bioengineering here at Penn State in Dr. Dong's Lab.  I am working on the Mechanisms of Melanoma Tumor Cell Extravasation project in which I will focus on the fluid mechanics involved in tumor cell capture by endothelial and white blood cells.

Chong Haw Kwang - I graduated from the National University of Singapore in 2004 with a bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering. During my undergraduate years I felt that my interests drawn to the area of biology and engineering. Hence, with chemical engineering training as my background, I believe I can contribute greatly to this field. In Dr Dong's lab, my current research focuses on possible mechanisms of adhesion and capture of tumor cells from the bloodstream and particular proteins that aid metastasis of these cells across the endothelial.

UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS

  Maria Rozploch
Patricia Groleau - I am a Senior undergraduate in the Department of Biology with intentions of attending medical school after graduation.  My current research involves validating the mouse as a model for human melanoma extravasation both in vivo and in vitro. This past summer I participated in the Biomaterials and Bionanotechnology summer program (BBSI) with Dr. Dong where I began testing melanoma migration in vivo

Tara Yukinis - I am an undergraduate Bioengineering major (Chemical Engineering option) who has been working in Dr. Dong's lab since September 2006.  I first began working with then current PhD student Hsin-Hsin Peng, continuing work on her thesis dealing with quantitative analysis tools for mapping cellular interactions.  I am currently working on a  collaboration with grad student, Payal Khanna
