Highlights in Penn State Bioengineering


2005

The first class of undergraduates graduate with the BS degree in Bioengineering. Eighteen students complete their degree requirements, of which approximately one-third go on to medical school, one-third to graduate school and one-third to industry.

Three bioengineering faculty members were elected Fellows of the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES). BMES Fellow status is awarded to society members who demonstrate exceptional achievements and experience in the field of biomedical engineering, and a record of membership and participation in the society. Cheng Dong, professor of bioengineering, was cited for significant contributions to cellular biomechanics and to biological problems in leukocyte rheology, cancer immunoediting, and metastases using quantitative approaches. Herbert Lipowsky, professor and head of bioengineering, was honored for service to the BMES and the profession, and for research involving applications of engineering to elucidate the in-vivo rheology of blood in the microcirculation. James Ultman, distinguished professor of chemical engineering and bioengineering, was selected for long-term contribution to Penn State's bioengineering department and for mentoring and teaching numerous graduate students.

2004

Michael J. Eppihimer is appointed as Associate Professor of Bioenigneering following extensive experience in the pharmaceutical industry at Wyeth Research. He will establish a new program in Vascular Biology that aims to apply engineering methods to elucidate vascular function in health and disease, with an emphasis on thrombosis and blood cell - vessel interactions. Keefe Manning is appointed Assistant Professor of Bioengineering following post-doctoral studies in Penn State's Artificial Heart Laboratory at the University Park campus. His reseach and academic experiences will expand our academic programs in biofluidmechanics.

2003

Ahmed Heikal is appointed as Associate Professor of Bioengineering after serving on the research faculty of Cornell University's Applied Physics Laboratory. He will establish a new bioengineering program in the area of Functional Imaging of Biomolecules for the design of new biosensors and analysis of cellular function. Ryan Clement is appointed as Assistant Professor of Bioengineering. He joins our department following completion of his Ph.D. and post-doctoral studies at Arizona State University and brings to our department his expertise in neural engineering and man-machine interfaces.

2002

With funding from the National Institute of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF), and with additional funding the Penn State departments of Bioengineering and Chemistry and the Hershey Medical Center have developed a new Summer Institute for upper-level undergraduate students and 1st-year graduate students to provide interdisciplinary research experience and training in Biomaterials and Bionanotechnology (BBSI).


2001

Professor Cheng Dong is elected to Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE).

Peter J. Butler is appointed as Assitant Professor of Bioengineering after receiving his Ph.D. at CUNY and performing post-doctoral research at the University of California, San Diego. He aims to establish a research program in the mechanics of signal transduction in cells of the arterial wall with an emphasis on exploring the development of vascular diseases such as atherosclerosis. Jeffrey D. Zahn is appointed as Assistant Professor of Bioengineering after receiving his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, and performing post-doctoral research at Carnegie Mellon University. He aims to establish a research program on the development of micro and nanoscale devices and biomicroelectromechanical systems (BioMEMS) for biochemical sensing, biochemical separations, and drug
delivery.

The first class of freshman students enters Penn State to study for the BS in Bioengineering in the new Department of Bioengineering.

2000

William O. Hancock is appointed as Assistant Professor of Bioengineering after receiving his Ph.D. and performing post-doctoral research at the University of Washington, Seattle. He aims to develop a new laboratory for the study of molecular motors and intracellular transport.

A special award is received from the Whitaker Foundation to establish a new Department of Bioengineering at Penn State and a new undergraduate program leading to the BS in Bioengineering.

1999

Nadine B. Smith is appointed as Assistant Professor of Bioengineering after serving as a post-doctoral fellow at Harvard Medical School, and begins the development of a new laboratory on therapeutic applications of ultrasound and NMR imaging.

Professor Cheng Dong appointed as Member to the U.S. National Committee of Biomechanics representing the Biomedical Engineering Society, and elected to the Board of Directors of the Biomedical Engineering Society.

Professor John Tarbell Elected a Vice President of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE).

Professor Roger Gaumond awarded Inventor Incentive Award by the Penn State Research Foundation for US Patent Application "Muscle Stimulating Device and Method for Diagnosing and Treating a Breathing Disorder."

Professor Roger Gaumond selected to serve as consultant in "Medical Electronics" to the Malaysian government as part of Midwest Universities for International Activities' Malaysia Polytechnic Development Project.

1998

Norman R. Harris appointed as Assistant Professor of Bioengineering after serving on the faculty of LSU Medical School and establishes a new research laboratory at Penn State in the area of transvascular exchange in the microcirculation.

David B. Geselowitz appointed Historian of IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society.

The Institute for Biomedical Engineering is established at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center to promote interactions among Bioengineering and clinical faculty, with the help of a Special Opportunity Award from the Whitaker Foundation. Professor Gerson Rosenberg is appointed Director of the new Institute.

C. Dong, H. H. Lipowsky and J. Tarbell invited to serve as delegates to the 5th US-China-Japan-Singapore Conference on Biomechanics in Sendai, Japan.

A new academic initiative in biomolecular transport dynamics is funded by a Special Opportunity Award from the Whitaker Foundation. Two new faculty and new thrusts in teaching and research in the area of molecular transport at the cellular and tissue level are planned under the direction of Dr. John Tarbell.

John Tarbell appointed to the rank of Distinguished Professor in Chemical and Bioengineering at Penn State.

James S. Ultman elected Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE).

David B. Geselowitz, Professor of Bioengineering and Founding Chairman of Bioengineering, retires from the teaching faculty in Bioengineering and is appointed Professor Emeritus after 28 years of service to Penn State.

Professor Cheng Dong elected as Secretary to the North American Society of Biorheology.

1997

National Research Resource Center in Ultrasound Transducer Engineering established with a grant from the NIH under the direction of Professor K. Kirk Shung.

1996

Professor Herbert H. Lipowsky is elected to Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE).

Bioengineering Program hosts the 7th Annual Fall Meeting of the Biomedical Engineering Society at the University Park campus. Approximately 700 people attend, and 513 scientific papers are given. Scenes from the meeting may be viewed on our web site. Click here to view them.

Professor John Tarbell appointed to four year term on NIH study section on Surgery and Bioengineering.

Professor James S. Ultman elected Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers

Professor Cheng Dong received the Y.C. Fung Young Investigator Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).

Professor Cheng Dong received the Faculty Early Career Development Award from the National Science Foundation (NSF).

1994

Center for Ultrasound Transducer Engineering, under the direction of Prof. K. Kirk Shung, established through a grant from the Whitaker Foundation.

Professor Cheng Dong receives American Cancer Society Junior Faculty Research Award.

Professor Cheng Dong elected by US National Committee on Biomechanics as a delegate to the Fourth China-Japan-US Conference on Biomechanics.

1993

Professor K. Kirk Shung elected as a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

1992

Program named semi-finalist in Whitaker Foundation Biomedical Engineering Development Award national competition and is only school in Pennsylvania to finish among top 14 applicants.

Professor K. Kirk Shung authors text book on "Principles of Medical Imaging," Academic Press.

Professor Cheng Dong receives Biomedical Engineering Society's Dr. Harold Lamport Young Investigator Award.

Professor Cheng Dong appointed to Bioengineering faculty after serving as a staff-fellow in the Biomedical Engineering Branch of the National Institutes of Health

Professor Herbert H. Lipowsky elected President of the U.S. Microcirculatory Society, Inc., a five-hundred member national organization.

Professors David B. Geselowitz and K. Kirk Shung elected as Founding Fellows of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering.

Professor David B. Geselowitz presents Ueda Memorial Lecture of the Japanese Electrocardiology Society, Tokyo.

1991

Professor David B. Geselowitz elected as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

1990

Penn State Artificial Heart named a National Historic Landmark by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Holly the Calf survives 388 days with total electric artificial heart .

William S. Pierce, M.D. gives Hastings Lecture at the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute.

Bioengineering Program hosts Sixteenth Annual Northeast Bioengineering Conference. Proceedings published by IEEE, edited by Professor Roger P. Gaumond.

1989

Professor David B. Geselowitz elected to the National Academy of Engineering

Undergraduate minor in Bioengineering instituted under the direction of Professor Roger P. Gaumond.

Professor Herbert H. Lipowsky appointed as Chairman of Bioengineering Program after serving 12 years on the faculty of Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons.
