Overview
The Bioengineering Program at Penn State offers an Undergraduate
Minor in Bioengineering. The minor is open to students in any undergraduate
program, but is particularly suitable for engineering students seeking
careers in health-related professions.
The undergraduate minor in bioengineering allows a student to develop
his or her interest in medical engineering applications, while pursuing
a traditional undergraduate engineering degree, such as electrical,
mechanical, chemical, industrial engineering, or engineering science.
Career Opportunities
Opportunities in medical instrument design and development, manufacture
and sales, and in medical center research and operational support
are available to students with almost any undergraduate engineering
degree and an interest in medical applications. Pursuit of a bioengineering
minor may be of interest to engineering students considering careers
as physicians. Most importantly, the bioengineering minor is intended
to provide students with a view of research areas in bioengineering,
and with a solid background for graduate-level work in this area.

Program Requirements (18 credits)
Prescribed Courses (3 credits)
CHEM 112 (formerly Chem 13)
Additional Courses (6 credits)
- Select 3 credits of physiology from BIOL 141 or BIOL 472
- Select 3 credits of molecular/cell biology from BIOE
201, BIOL 230 and BMB
251. If BIOE 201 is
not selected, then the elective must be a BIOE course.
Supporting Courses (9 credits)
- Select 6-9 credits of bioengineering coursework from 3-credit
courses at the 300, 400, or 500 level.
- Select 0-3 credits of electives (MATSE 403, MATSE
404, IE 327, BE
308, CHE 340, CHE
438, NUCE 420, EE
455, EE 458), or
complete an honors thesis
on a topic in bioengineering.
Total Bioengineering credits must be at least 9. Total of all credits
in prescribed, additional, and supporting categories must be at least
18. Only 3 credits of independent research (494 or 496 courses) may be used toward the minor.
Admission Requirements
Applicants wishing to enroll in the bioengineering minor should
have completed background courses in mathematics (MATH 141) and physics
(PHYS 211), and have evidence of excellent grades.
