Wong named Society of Laboratory Automation and Screening Fellow

10/17/2016

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Pak Kin Wong, professor of biomedical engineering and mechanical engineering at Penn State, has been named a Fellow Member of the Society of Laboratory Automation and Screening (SLAS).

A brand new membership category, Fellow Member is an invitation‐only distinction earned by a combination of membership tenure, professional experience and contribution of technical expertise and volunteer service to SLAS and its global membership community.

As a Fellow Member, Wong has been identified as one of the organization’s most exceptional contributors who embodies the mission-driven goals of the SLAS, which focus on serving life sciences professionals via practitioner-driven knowledge, education and peer-to-peer connections.

A Penn State faculty member since 2015, Wong focuses his research on microfluidics, biomechanics and transducer design to address important problems in biology and medicine.

He currently heads the Systematic Bioengineering Laboratory at Penn State, a research group that aims to advance biomanufacturing strategies for translational applications, including cell migration in tissue regeneration and cancer metastasis, as well as molecular and microfluidic systems for clinical diagnostics.

Wong’s previous awards and honors include the University of Arizona’s Outstanding Faculty Award (2013); and the National Institutes of Health Director’s New Innovator Award (2010). He has also been identified as one of 16 finalists in the National Institutes of Health’s “Follow that Cell Challenge,” a competition in which he will compete for the grand prize in 2017.

Prior to joining Penn State, Wong held faculty positions at the University of Arizona, where he served as an associate professor of aerospace and mechanical engineering with joint appointments in the biomedical engineering graduate interdisciplinary program, the Bio5 Institute for Collaborative Bioresearch, the agricultural and biosystems engineering department, and the Southwest Environmental Center.

Wong will be formally recognized as an inaugural Fellow Member at the SLAS annual international conference and exhibition on February 7, 2017, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C.
