Scheduling Recommendations

It is essential to complete prerequisites for your courses. If you do not, you may not be permitted to enroll in required classes and your graduation will be delayed.

Please follow the suggested schedule for completing the Biomedical Engineering B.S. program in four years. This is just one possible way to complete the requirements, but it does take into account course sequencing and prerequisites.

Please keep in mind that it is necessary to complete course prerequisites with a passing grade prior to scheduling core Biomedical Engineering courses (BME 201, BME 301, BME 303, BME 313, BME 401, BME 402, BME 403, BME 404). In particular, biomedical engineering students should insure that prerequisites are complete at the start of the semester for fifth semester core BME courses. Additionally most BME courses are taught only once per year, the semester they are scheduled to be taken.

Fall Semester Courses: BME 301, BME 303, BME 313, BME 406, BME 410, BME 413, BME 440, BME 443, and BME 445

Spring Semester Courses: BME 201, BME 401, BME 404, BME 402, BME 403, BME 409, BME 419, BME 423, BME 444, and BME 450W

Courses in biomedical engineering are not offered during the summer. However, some of the required prerequisites for BME courses may be available at University Park, at other Penn State campus locations, or through Penn State World Campus.

Computer Science Requirement: You are required to take CMPSC 200 because the course material focuses on MatLab, which will be used extensively in future BME classes, specifically BME 301 and BME 401. If you are at a campus that does not offer this course, it is best to take it during your fourth semester at University Park while taking BME 201.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering administers the undergraduate major in biomedical engineering, and is a part of the university-wide Intercollege Graduate Degree Program, offering both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Bioengineering.
