ABET Accreditation

The Penn State Biomedical Engineering undergraduate program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, https://www.abet.org, under the General Criteria and the Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering Program Criteria.

Our Mission

Our mission is to continually integrate engineering science with the fundamental principles of math, biology, healthcare, and design.

In addition, we aim to offer our students a wide range of opportunities to explore research, design, industry employment, and international experiences while completing the bachelor of science degree.

Program Educational Objectives

Consistent with the mission of Penn State and the College of Engineering, the bachelor of science program in biomedical engineering aims to create world-class engineers who will contribute to social and economic development through the application of engineering.

Within three to five years after graduation, we expect our graduates to be:

  • Employed in industry and government positions which include but are not limited to: research and development, regulation, manufacturing, quality assurance and sales and marketing
  • Enrolled in graduate school, continuing education, or other professional development programs related to biomedical sciences and engineering
  • Enrolled in medical school, dental school, or other health-related professional training programs.

Program Outcomes (Student Outcomes)

Upon graduation from the biomedical engineering program, students will have:

  • An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
  • An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.
  • An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
  • An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.
  • An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.
  • An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze, and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.
  • An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
 
 

About

The Department of Biomedical Engineering administers the undergraduate major in biomedical engineering, and is a part of the university-wide Intercollege Graduate Degree Program, offering both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Bioengineering. Our work combines traditional engineering principles with medicine and technology for the betterment of human health and society.
